A Case of Herpes Esophagitis Confirmed by In Situ Hybridization

Abstract

|
rpes simplex esophagitis is a rare disease. Mostely, it occurs in hospitalized,
immunosuppressed, and preterminal patients with or without malignancy. It is confirmed by
In situ hybridization, immunohistochemistry, or direct visualization of virus by
electronmicroscopy. Among them the former is an useful technique for rapid detect
viral nucleic acids in the tissue sections.
We report a esophageal ulceration with pancreatic pseudocyst. Herpetic esophagitis
was suggested by characteristic endoscopic and light microscopic findings, and it was
confirmed by In situ hybridization in the tissue section. With symptomatic treatment, this
patient was recovered from esophageal ulceration.
